Overview
Alexandre Dumas published The Three Musketeers in 1844, releasing the first volume of his d'Artagnan Romances after collaborating with ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. This swashbuckling tale spans roughly 500 pages and transports readers to Paris between 1625 and 1628. The narrative follows young Gascon nobleman d'Artagnan as he travels from home to join the elite Musketeers of the Guard. He cannot enter the corps immediately but quickly bonds with three legendary swordsmen: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together they navigate court intrigue and royal secrets while upholding a code of honor that defines their friendship. Dumas weaves political commentary into this adventure by exposing the corruption and absurdities of the Ancien Régime. Readers encountered these themes during the July Monarchy, just four years before the 1848 revolution reshaped France. The story originally appeared in serial form from March to July 1844. While the book stands firmly as a historical fiction classic, its exploration of loyalty and justice resonated deeply with contemporary debates between monarchists and republicans. Dumas later continued d'Artagnan's journey in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later.
