Cleopatra's greatest accolade is her enduring fame. She was the first Ptolemaic ruler to speak Egyptian, a move that endeared her to her subjects. She successfully maintained Egypt's independence against Rome for most of her reign, a feat no other Hellenistic ruler managed. Her diplomatic skills were legendary; she charmed two of Rome's most powerful men. Though defeated, her story has inspired more plays, paintings, and films than almost any other ancient figure.
