“Lily James delivers a performance of quiet strength and vulnerability, bringing a humanity to the role that makes the fairy tale feel real.”
A.O. Scott
The New York Times

Released in March 2015, this live-action adaptation reimagines the classic tale with a focus on resilience rather than rescue. Director Kenneth Branagh helmed the project to capture the warmth of the 1950 animated original while grounding the story in a more realistic emotional landscape. Lily James leads the cast as Ella, a young woman whose life shifts from comfort to servitude after her father dies and her mother passes away.
The film distinguishes itself by emphasizing the theme that kindness is a magic all its own. Instead of relying solely on external forces to save the protagonist, the narrative highlights how Ella's character choices shape her destiny. The production design by Sarah Greenwood and costumes by Sandy Powell create a visually sumptuous world that feels both timeless and fresh for modern audiences.

Ella lives a quiet life in the countryside until tragedy strikes twice in quick succession. First her father dies, leaving her alone with her widowed mother who has recently married Lord Granville Tremaine. When her mother also passes away, Lady Tremaine reveals her true nature by stripping Ella of her status and reducing her to a scullery maid known only as Cinderella. She locks Ella away in the attic and forces her to work alongside two mice named Jaq and Gus, who become her only companions in the oppressive household.
Lady Tremaine's daughters, Anastasia and Drizella, join their mother in tormenting Ella, treating her with open cruelty and disdain. Despite the harsh treatment, Ella refuses to let bitterness take root in her heart. She finds solace in the memory of her parents' teachings and spends her time caring for the animals and maintaining the home. Her only escape comes when she meets Kit, a stable boy who works at the nearby castle. They share conversations about freedom and the desire to choose one's own path, unaware that he is actually Prince Charming.
The King announces a royal ball to find a bride for his son before he inherits the throne. Lady Tremaine forbids Ella from attending and destroys her dress to ensure she stays behind. On the night of the ball, Kit sneaks out to meet Ella in the garden where they dance together under the stars. Their connection deepens until guards interrupt them, forcing Ella to flee back to the house. Desperate to attend the ball and perhaps find a way to change her fate, she prays to her late mother's memory.
A magical figure known as the Fairy Godmother appears to help Ella. She transforms a pumpkin into a carriage, turns mice into horses, and creates a beautiful blue gown for Ella. However, she warns that the spell will break at midnight. Ella arrives at the palace and captivates everyone with her grace. Prince Kit does not recognize her as the girl from the garden but is drawn to her spirit. They dance and talk about being true to oneself.
As the clock begins to chime twelve, Ella realizes she must leave immediately. In her haste to escape the advancing servants, she loses one of her glass slippers. She flees the palace just as the magic fades, leaving the Prince heartbroken but determined to find the owner of the shoe. The kingdom begins a search for the mysterious girl while Ella returns to her life of servitude, holding onto hope that her life might change again.
