Laughton's Oscar win for The Private Life of Henry VIII made him one of the earliest British actors to win the Academy Award. His only directorial effort, The Night of the Hunter, is now regarded as a masterpiece of American cinema, frequently appearing on lists of the greatest films ever made. He also earned a Grammy for his spoken word recordings, showcasing his skill as a reader and storyteller.
