Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock was born into a wealthy British family with a legacy of heroism. Her brother Brian became the super-powered Captain Britain, and her twin brother Jamie developed reality-altering abilities. Betsy herself was a mutant with powerful telepathic skills, but she only discovered her abilities after a traumatic event in her youth. She initially served as a field agent for S.T.R.I.K.E., a British intelligence agency, before joining her brother's fight against threats to the realm.

In the late 1980s, Betsy's life took a bizarre turn when she was captured by the villainous Mandarin. He used his technology to swap her consciousness with that of Kwannon, a Japanese assassin. This body swap left Betsy in Kwannon's body, giving her the appearance of a Japanese woman while retaining her own mind and telepathic powers. For years, she believed she had been physically transformed, but the truth was later revealed.
