Kurapika was born into the Kurta Clan, a reclusive community that lived in a remote mountain village. The clan possessed a rare genetic trait: their eyes turned scarlet when they experienced intense emotions, a phenomenon that made their eyes highly prized as art by collectors. This made them targets. When Kurapika was a child, the Phantom Troupe, a notorious band of thieves, massacred the entire clan, tearing out their eyes and leaving the bodies behind. Kurapika, who had been away at the time, returned to find the village in ruins. He swore to avenge his people and recover every last eye.

To pursue his goal, he decided to become a Hunter, a licensed professional with access to restricted information and resources. He also began studying under Light Nostrade, a wealthy mafia boss, eventually becoming the underboss of the Nostrade Family. This position gave him the resources and connections to track down the Phantom Troupe and the stolen eyes. In the later manga arcs, particularly the Succession Contest arc on the Black Whale, Kurapika's role expands significantly. He becomes the bodyguard of Prince Woble, one of the Kakin princes, and becomes embroiled in the political machinations of the succession war. He must use all his skills to protect his charge while also dealing with the return of the Phantom Troupe, who are also on the ship.
