Hawkman

Hawkman's origin splits into two classic versions, later reconciled. The Golden Age Hawkman is Carter Hall, an archaeologist who discovers he is the reincarnation of an Egyptian prince named Khufu. In ancient Egypt, Khufu was murdered with a knife forged from a mysterious alien metal called Nth metal. The metal cursed his soul to be reborn across lifetimes. Carter dons a hawk-themed costume and uses Nth metal to fly, becoming a founding member of the Justice Society of America.

The Silver Age introduced Katar Hol, a police officer from the planet Thanagar. Thanagarians evolved with a natural ability to use Nth metal, which is abundant on their world. Katar and his wife Shayera Thal (Hawkgirl) travel to Earth to study human law enforcement. Using a harness and artificial wings, Katar becomes Hawkman and joins the Justice League of America. After Crisis on Infinite Earths, these two histories merged, with Katar Hol revealed as a past life of Carter Hall's reincarnating soul.[edit]

Hawkman is determined, honorable, and often stubborn. Centuries of reincarnation have made him wise but also prone to melancholy, as he carries memories of countless deaths and losses. He is fiercely protective of his loved ones, especially Hawkgirl, and has a strong sense of justice that sometimes puts him at odds with more flexible heroes. In combat, he is relentless and strategic, preferring direct confrontation. Despite his warrior nature, he values knowledge and history, often working as an archaeologist or curator.[edit]

Hawkman's character development is defined by his struggle to reconcile his many past lives. In Geoff Johns' JSA and Hawkman (2002–2004), Carter Hall fully embraces his reincarnation cycle, seeking to unite the fragments of his soul. He discovers past lives as a medieval knight, a Wild West gunslinger, a World War I pilot, and the Thanagarian Katar Hol. This journey brings him peace but also new enemies, like the immortal Vandal Savage, who killed his original Egyptian self.

In the New 52, Hawkman was rebooted as a Thanagarian alien, but DC Rebirth restored the reincarnation mythology. Robert Venditti's 2018 Hawkman series (29 issues) was a critical success, depicting Carter's quest to repair the fractured timeline of his lives. He ultimately sacrifices his own existence to restore the multiverse, only to be reborn again, continuing his eternal cycle.

In the DCEU film Black Adam (2022), Carter Hall is the chairman of the Justice Society, a confident leader who clashes with the anti-hero Black Adam. The film ends with Hawkman surviving and vowing to protect Earth.[edit]

Hawkman is often considered a B-list hero, but his complex history has earned him a devoted fanbase. The character's convoluted continuity is frequently cited as an example of comic book storytelling's challenges, yet it also makes him a favorite among lore enthusiasts. His hawk-themed design and signature mace are visually iconic. The 2022 film Black Adam brought him mainstream attention, with Aldis Hodge's portrayal receiving positive reviews for bringing gravitas to the role. Hawkman remains a pillar of the Justice Society and a symbol of heroism tied to ancient destiny.[edit]
