Slade Joseph Wilson was born to a military family and enlisted in the U.S. Army at a young age. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the most skilled soldiers in the service. During his time in the military, he met and married Adeline Kane, a fellow soldier, and they had three children: Grant, Joseph, and Rose. After leaving the service, Slade volunteered for an experimental super-soldier program. The serum granted him enhanced physical and mental abilities, but it also destabilized his psyche. A mission gone wrong cost him his right eye, which he now covers with a distinctive black-and-orange mask. Seeking to provide for his family, Slade turned to mercenary work, taking the name Deathstroke. His first major contract, arranged by the criminal organization HIVE, involved assassinating the Teen Titans. The mission led to the death of his son Grant, who had been manipulated into working for HIVE.
