Daenerys Targaryen was born on Dragonstone during a great storm, earning her the name Stormborn. She is the youngest child of King Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King, and his sister-wife Queen Rhaella. Shortly after her birth, her mother died in childbirth, and Daenerys was smuggled across the Narrow Sea to Essos by loyal retainers to escape the rebellion that overthrew the Targaryen dynasty. She grew up in exile, moving between the Free Cities, always dependent on her older brother Viserys. Viserys, who styled himself the Beggar King, raised her with cruelty and entitlement, constantly reminding her that she was the last hope of their house. He arranged her marriage to Khal Drogo, a powerful Dothraki warlord, in exchange for an army to reclaim the Iron Throne.
