    Overview

Castlevania, often called Castlevania 64, is a 1999 action-adventure game from Konami, released for the Nintendo 64. It marked the series' first jump into 3D, a bold move for a franchise known for its 2D side-scrolling. The game arrived late in the N64's life, and an expanded version, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, followed later that year.

You choose between two protagonists: Carrie Fernandez, a young orphan with magical abilities, or Reinhardt Schneider, a whip-wielding heir to the Belmont clan. Both set out to stop Count Dracula's return after a century of dormancy. The gameplay blends exploration, combat, and platforming across Dracula's sprawling castle, with each character offering different abilities and playstyles. The 3D environments were a significant shift, though the game received mixed reviews for its camera and controls. Still, it remains an interesting piece of the series' evolution, bridging the classic 2D era with the franchise's future experiments in 3D.

    Gameplay

Players pick between two characters, each with a distinct combat style. Carrie Fernandez zaps enemies with magic projectiles, while Reinhardt Schneider cracks a whip in the classic Belmont fashion. The castle is a maze of corridors, towers, and underground chambers, and you'll spend most of your time exploring, solving simple puzzles, and fighting monsters like skeletons, zombies, and the occasional boss. The camera is a fixed, cinematic style that often swings to awkward angles, and the controls feel stiff by today's standards. Still, there's a certain charm in the way the game tries to translate the series' gothic platforming into three dimensions, with platforming sections that require careful jumps over bottomless pits and moving platforms.

    Story

A century after Dracula's last defeat, the dark lord is stirring again. Both Carrie and Reinhardt have their own reasons to enter the cursed castle: Carrie, an orphan with latent magical powers, seeks to understand her abilities; Reinhardt, a descendant of the Belmont clan, carries the family whip and a duty to hunt the night. Their paths diverge as they explore Dracula's domain, encountering minions and unlocking secrets. The narrative unfolds through cutscenes and in-game events, with each character experiencing a slightly different version of the story. The climax sees them confront Dracula himself, who is resurrected in a ritual that threatens to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
