Overview
Dracula's castle rises from the shadows in 1796, and this time its son Alucard leads the charge. Players guide the dhampir through a sprawling, nonlinear fortress where every corridor hides secrets, new weapons, or hidden passages. This 1997 release by Konami transformed the franchise by blending action combat with deep role-playing mechanics. Alucard gains strength as he collects experience points and equips spells, allowing him to tackle challenges in almost any order. The design drew heavy inspiration from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest but refined those concepts into a tight, fluid experience that defined the Metroidvania genre.
Alucard enters the castle not to kill his father, who died decades ago, but to stop the demon Drolta Tzuentes from resurrecting Dracula's power once more. The narrative unfolds through dialogue and item descriptions rather than constant cutscenes, letting players piece together the tragedy of a half-human, half-vampire struggling against his own bloodline. He eventually confronts the true mastermind behind the resurrection and faces a final choice that determines whether the castle falls or survives.
Gameplay
Combat relies on real-time sword swings and magic spells while an RPG layer tracks stats like Strength and Vitality. Alucard transforms into a bat, wolf, or mist to reach areas blocked by physical barriers or high jumps. Over 140 enemies populate the map, dropping items that range from common gold to rare equipment pieces. Players can equip hundreds of different weapons and armor sets, each altering how the character moves or attacks. The castle layout changes based on which sections are unlocked, creating a unique path for every playthrough.
Story
The year is 1796 when Alucard finds his father's castle rising again after years of silence. Trevor Belmont defeated Dracula in 1691, but the demon's power returns through the efforts of Drolta Tzuentes and a resurrected form of the Count. Alucard infiltrates the fortress to find the source of the disturbance before it spreads across Europe. He learns that the castle itself is alive and connected to his father's soul. The journey reveals memories of his mother Lisa and the guilt he carries for his vampiric nature. In the end, he destroys the core of the castle to break the cycle of resurrection forever.
