Byakuya Kuchiki

Byakuya was born into the Kuchiki clan, one of Soul Society's four great noble families. His father Soujun died young, and his mother passed away when he was a child. Raised by his grandfather Ginrei, the previous head of the clan, Byakuya was groomed from an early age to suppress emotion and uphold family honor. As a teenager, he married Hisana, a woman from the Rukongai, but she died of illness shortly after. On her deathbed, she begged Byakuya to find her younger sister Rukia and adopt her. Byakuya fulfilled this promise, bringing Rukia into the noble household, though he kept the circumstances of her adoption secret to protect her from social stigma. [edit]

Byakuya projects an icy, aristocratic demeanor. He rarely shows emotion, speaks in a measured tone, and follows Soul Society's laws without question. After losing to Ichigo, Byakuya admits his failure and thanks him for saving Rukia. In the Arrancar arc, he fights alongside Ichigo and the other captains, showing growing respect for his former enemy. The Thousand-Year Blood War arc brings his most dramatic change. He is nearly killed by the Sternritter As Nodt, who uses fear-based powers that prey on Byakuya's hidden terror of losing loved ones. Rescued and healed by the Royal Guard, Byakuya returns with vastly increased power and a softer heart.
