About
Brent Mydland (October 21, 1952 – July 26, 1990) was an American keyboardist, songwriter and singer. He was a member of the rock band the Grateful Dead from 1979 until his death in 1990, a longer tenure than any other keyboardist in the band. Growing up in Concord, California, Mydland took up music while in elementary school. After graduation, he played with a number of bands and recorded one album with Silver before joining Bobby and the Midnites with Bob Weir and jazz veterans Billy Cobham and Alphonso Johnson. This led to an invitation to join the Dead in 1979, replacing Keith Godchaux. Mydland quickly became an important member in the Dead, using a variety of keyboards including Hammond organ and various synthesizers and singing regularly. He wrote several songs on the band's studio albums released while he was a member. In between touring, mid summer 1990, Mydland died of an accidental drug overdose.

Cause of Death
Accidental drug overdose (cocaine and morphine)
Brent Mydland spent his final three days in San Rafael, California, following a performance at Tijuana Stadium on July 23, 1990, where he had played keyboards and sang lead vocals for the Grateful Dead. On the morning of July 26, 1990, he was found unresponsive in his bed by his roommate, leading to immediate emergency services involvement before he could be revived. The Marin County Coroner's Office determined the cause of death as an accidental overdose resulting from a combination of cocaine and morphine, based on an autopsy that identified significant levels of these substances in his system. The public reaction within the Grateful Dead community was immediate and profound, with bandmates Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann issuing statements expressing their grief and shock.
The group canceled scheduled tour dates, including a planned appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, while fans spontaneously organized vigils in concert venues and online communities to share memories. Sales and streaming of albums like In the Dark and Built to Last surged as listeners sought to reconnect with his contributions, and memorial murals appeared throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. A private funeral ceremony took place shortly after his death in the San Rafael area, attended by close family members and select friends, after which he was cremated and his ashes were scattered in a location never disclosed to the public.
Mydland's legacy has been preserved through official releases of live recordings from his final era, such as the 1990 spring tour concerts, and his inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of the Grateful Dead in 2017. His equipment is occasionally loaned for tribute events by the Grateful Guitars Foundation, and his estate continues to manage royalties and licensing proceeds for his family and music education charities.
