Dr. Amelia Brand is a biologist working at a secret NASA facility in a near-future Earth devastated by crop blight and dust storms. She is the daughter of Professor John Brand, the director of NASA's remnant program. Together they develop two contingency plans: Plan A, to solve a gravitational equation and move humanity off Earth, and Plan B, to colonize a new planet using cryogenically frozen human embryos.
