His 72 confirmed victories remain unmatched by any other Canadian pilot, a testament to his extraordinary skill and bravery. The Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the British and Commonwealth forces, was bestowed upon him for his daring solo raid, a feat that has become legendary. His contributions extended beyond the war, as he played a pivotal role in establishing the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, which trained over 130,000 aircrew members.
