Augustus's achievements are extraordinary by any measure. He founded an empire that lasted over four centuries in the west and a millennium in the east. He established the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace that spanned two centuries. His political system, the principate, became the model for Roman governance. He transformed Rome from a city of brick to marble, building the Forum of Augustus, the Ara Pacis, and the original Pantheon. His patronage of Virgil, Horace, and Livy created a golden age of Latin literature. He expanded the empire to its natural borders and reformed its administration, army, and finances. The month of August is named in his honor. These accomplishments place him among the most influential figures in Western civilization.
