Duthie's career was marked by several notable firsts. She was the first university botany lecturer in South Africa educated entirely within the country, and she founded the Department of Botany at Stellenbosch University, which she led for over four decades. Her research on cryptogams, including slime moulds and liverworts, contributed significantly to the field. The Duthie Reserve, named in her honor, preserves a unique habitat for the critically endangered Haemanthus pumilio, and her legacy continues to inspire botanists today.
