Ashikaga Yoshiaki holds the unique distinction of being the 15th and final shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. While he did not win modern awards or achieve commercial success in the contemporary sense, his story has been immortalized in Japanese culture. He is frequently depicted in historical dramas, most notably in the 1982 NHK taiga drama Touge no Gunzou, portrayed by actor Go Kato. In recent years, his character gained renewed attention through his appearance in the 2025 video game Assassin's Creed Shadows.
