Toynbee's greatest achievement was the sheer scale and ambition of A Study of History, a 12-volume analysis of 26 civilizations that remains a landmark in the philosophy of history. He was one of the few historians to achieve widespread public recognition, with his work debated in both academic journals and popular magazines. His challenge-response theory influenced fields beyond history, including sociology and political science. Though later critics found his framework too neat, his impact on how people think about civilizations is undeniable.
