Anthony of Padua's record is unlike any modern celebrity's. He was canonized less than a year after his death, one of the fastest canonizations in Church history, and in 1946 Pope Pius XII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, a rare honor given to theologians whose work shaped the faith. He is the patron saint of lost and stolen things, the poor, shipwrecks, starvation, amputees, and marriage, a breadth of patronage that few saints can match. His Basilica in Padua remains one of the most visited shrines in Italy.
