Overview
Origin Story
Anakin Skywalker was born into slavery on the desert planet Tatooine around 41 BBY. His mother, Shmi Skywalker, claimed he had no biological father, a mystery that led many Jedi to believe he was conceived by the Force itself. As a child, Anakin showed extraordinary mechanical aptitude, building his own protocol droid, C-3PO, and modifying a podracer. He was discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who sensed the boy's immense Force potential and took him to Coruscant for training. The Jedi Council, wary of his age and emotional attachments, initially refused to train him, but after Qui-Gon's death, Obi-Wan Kenobi took Anakin as his Padawan learner.
Personality
Anakin was defined by his intense emotions and fierce loyalty, but also by a deep-seated fear of loss. He was confident to the point of arrogance, often challenging authority and pushing boundaries. His love for his mother and later for Padmé Amidala drove many of his actions, as did a burning desire for power to protect those he cared about. This emotional volatility, combined with a sense of entitlement as the Chosen One, made him susceptible to manipulation. He could be charming and heroic, but also prone to anger and resentment when he felt others didn't trust him.
Story Arc
Anakin's journey is one of the most tragic in all of fiction: a prophesied hero who becomes the galaxy's greatest villain before finding redemption. As a Padawan and later a Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars, he distinguished himself as a brilliant military commander and a powerful Jedi, earning the nickname 'The Hero With No Fear.' But his secret marriage to Padmé Amidala and his mother's violent death at the hands of Tusken Raiders planted seeds of darkness. Chancellor Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, exploited Anakin's fear of losing Padmé, promising him the power to save her from death. In a desperate attempt to gain that power, Anakin betrayed the Jedi Order, helped Palpatine eliminate Mace Windu, and was rechristened Darth Vader. He led the massacre of the Jedi at the Jedi Temple and executed Order 66 across the galaxy. In a lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar, he was horribly burned and mutilated, then rebuilt into a life-supporting suit of black armor. For two decades, he served as Palpatine's enforcer, until the love of his son, Luke Skywalker, stirred the remnants of Anakin within Vader. In his final moments, he threw Emperor Palpatine into a reactor shaft to save Luke, fulfilling the prophecy by destroying the Sith and bringing balance to the Force. He died in Luke's arms and later appeared as a Force ghost alongside Obi-Wan and Yoda.

Reception & Legacy
Anakin Skywalker, particularly as Darth Vader, is one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in film history. Vader's black helmet and breathing sound have become cultural touchstones. The prequel trilogy's portrayal of Anakin's fall received mixed reviews initially, with some criticizing the dialogue and romance, but over time, Hayden Christensen's performance has been reappraised positively. The character's tragic arc is widely praised for its Shakespearean depth, and his redemption in Return of the Jedi remains one of cinema's most emotional moments. Anakin consistently ranks high on lists of greatest film characters and villains.
