Her standing rests less on a shelf of trophies than on a position no one else occupies. She is the best-selling Portuguese recording artist in history, with a catalogue of roughly thirty studio albums and dozens of singles, and she is credited with carrying fado to more than seventy countries at a time when Portuguese was not a language of the international music business. She did it without altering her style, and the refusal is part of the achievement. The title Rainha do Fado was in general use in her lifetime and has not been reassigned since. Institutions have followed the public: the Museu do Fado keeps her as its reference point, and in October 2025 the Luso-American Development Foundation devoted a Carnegie Hall concert to her, with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra making its United States debut. For a singer who never had a global hit single in English, that is an unusual kind of reach.
