Al Powell

Sergeant Al Powell is a veteran LAPD officer with a tragic past. Years before the events of Die Hard, he shot and killed a young boy who was holding a realistic toy gun. The trauma left him psychologically scarred, unable to draw his weapon on anyone since. He carries this guilt every day, which shapes his cautious, empathetic demeanor.

On Christmas Eve 1988, Powell is dispatched to Nakatomi Plaza on a routine call about a possible disturbance. He buys Twinkies on the way, presenting as a weary, ordinary cop. When John McClane drops a dead terrorist onto his patrol car, Powell becomes McClane's lifeline to the outside world, coordinating with LAPD command and providing emotional support over the radio.

At the film's climax, Powell overcomes his trauma when the terrorist Karl tries to kill McClane and his wife Holly. He instinctively draws his handgun and shoots Karl, saving their lives and redeeming himself.
