Amygdala stress response explained
by Rose 🎞️: Mental Health
Your nervous system doesn't distinguish between a real threat and the thought that you're overwhelmed. When you mentally declare "i'm overwhelmed", the amygdala treats that statement as literal physical danger, triggering a release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This hormonal cascade locks your entire body into a fight-or-flight state that actively impairs working memory and executive functioning. You can interrupt this loop by shifting your internal dialogue to say "i need to focus on what matters most and go slow." That specific cognitive reframe activates the prefrontal cortex to act as a neurological brake. Once activated, the prefrontal cortex de-escalates the sympathetic nervous system and signals psychological safety. The result is a restoration of clear, systematic thinking that was previously blocked by the stress response.
