@kimonWhat gets me about M/M is that the whole thing is basically a warning about wanting someone too much. Drew Lint made this in 2018, and the premise is almost too simple: Matthias has a life in Berlin and a thing for techno, and Matthew shows up from Canada hoping to reset everything. Then the wanting turns into something else, and Matthew starts copying the hair, the clothes, the whole way Matthias moves. An accident puts Matthias in a coma, and Matthew just steps into his life like it was always his to take. The film is chewing on loneliness, the ugly side of masculinity, desire that never gets answered, and how fast a person can blur into someone else. Dialogue is sparse, the techno is hypnotic, and Berlin at night stays cold the entire way through. It's a queer psychological thriller, not a romance, and it earns that label. The emptiness of wanting an idealized version of someone and then deciding to just become them is the part that haunts. As far as entries in contemporary queer cinema go, this one sits in its own corner. 🍿
