Zip2

Zip2 started life in 1995 as Global Link Information Network, a tiny Palo Alto startup founded by Elon Musk, his brother Kimbal, and Greg Kouri. The idea came to Elon during a summer internship when he watched a Yellow Pages salesman pitch online listings to local businesses. He figured newspapers would need digital city guides, so Zip2 built software that combined business directories with maps and directions, then licensed it to papers like the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. The team worked out of a cramped office, sleeping on the couch and showering at the YMCA, often clocking 100-hour weeks.

In 1999, Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million in cash. Elon walked away with about $20 million, which he promptly poured into his next venture, X.com, the company that eventually became PayPal. The irony? Zip2 never turned a profit. Compaq shut it down in 2003, making it a classic dot-com story: a flash of innovation, a lucky exit, and a founder who learned hard lessons about leadership. Musk later admitted he was naive and wished he could go back and slap his younger self for poor communication with employees.

Today Zip2 is remembered less for its software and more as the first chapter in Elon Musk's career. It proved that internet-based local services had potential, even if the timing and business model weren't quite right.
