ZeniMax Media was born in Rockville, Maryland, on May 26, 1999, when Christopher Weaver and Robert A. Altman decided to build a holding company around Weaver's Bethesda Softworks. The name mixes 'Zenith' and 'Maximum', a signal of ambition that proved accurate. Over the next two decades, ZeniMax assembled a stable of studios that defined entire genres: Bethesda Game Studios with its open-world RPGs, id Software with its pioneering shooters, Arkane Studios with its immersive sims, and MachineGames with its narrative-driven action. The company stayed private until September 2020, when Microsoft announced it would buy ZeniMax for $8.1 billion. The deal closed in March 2021, making ZeniMax a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios while preserving its internal structure.

ZeniMax's portfolio spans some of gaming's most recognizable IP. Bethesda Game Studios released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, a title that has sold over 60 million copies and been ported to nearly every platform. id Software's 2016 Doom reboot revitalized the franchise with a blistering pace and heavy metal soundtrack. Arkane's Dishonored series won praise for its player-driven level design. ZeniMax Online Studios launched The Elder Scrolls Online in 2014, which grew into one of the most successful subscription MMOs, generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue. The company also published hits like Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush, the latter developed by Tango Gameworks before Microsoft closed that studio in 2024.

ZeniMax's legacy is not without controversy. The 2018 launch of Fallout 76 was marred by technical bugs and a promotional canvas bag fiasco that led to a class-action lawsuit. Internal reports in 2021 described a culture of crunch and harassment, prompting the company to hire a diversity officer. A legal battle with Oculus VR over trade secrets ended in a $500 million settlement in 2018. Despite these setbacks, ZeniMax's core studios remain operational and profitable under Microsoft. Starfield, Bethesda's first new IP in 25 years, launched in September 2023 and attracted over 10 million players by year's end.
