Zdeněk Svěrák's career is marked by rare achievements. He is one of only a few Czech screenwriters to have received three Academy Award nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category, winning once. His creation of the Jára Cimrman character is a unique cultural phenomenon, with a museum and a devoted following. His songs for children, written with Jaroslav Uhlíř, have become part of Czech cultural heritage, and his books remain bestsellers.
