You're Still the One

Shania Twain's "You're Still the One" came out of a dare. The Canadian singer and her producer-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange were tired of hearing snide remarks about their 15-year age gap and creative partnership. So they turned the gossip into a song, a ballad that doesn't just shrug off the doubters but celebrates a love that stuck. Written by the pair, the track became the third single from Twain's 1997 blockbuster album Come On Over, and it quickly outgrew its country roots. With a gentle piano line, soft mandolin, and Twain's warm, unforced vocals, it sounded like nothing else on radio in early 1998.

Mercury Records sent the song to pop stations on January 13, 1998, then to country radio a month later. It climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, went double platinum, and hit number one in Australia. At the 1999 Grammys, it picked up four nominations, including Record and Song of the Year, and won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. David Hogan's video, shot on a Malibu beach with actor John Devoe, earned a 1998 MTV VMA nod for Best Female Video, making Twain the first country artist ever nominated in that category.

Decades later, the song keeps finding new life. In 2014, Twain recorded a duet with Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes. A remastered version dropped in 2023. And in June 2026, rising country artist Ella Langley released a stripped-down piano cover that Twain herself praised. Langley called the song "a masterpiece" and said she'd "never get over it." Riley Green also took a crack at it earlier that year. The original remains a staple of Twain's live shows, including a July 2026 SiriusXM concert in New York where Page Six cheekily crowned her "still the one." [edit]
