On August 15, 1995, Michael Jackson released "You Are Not Alone" as the second single from his album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. The song was written entirely by R. Kelly, who sent Jackson a demo after going through a difficult personal period. Jackson felt a deep connection to the track and co-produced it with Kelly during sessions in Chicago. The result was a slow-burning R&B ballad built around Jackson's expressive vocals and lush string arrangements.

The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, featured Jackson and his then-wife Lisa Marie Presley in semi-nude, intimate scenes that generated significant media buzz. Critics praised the song's emotional weight and Jackson's delivery, though some controversy surrounded Kelly's songwriting credit. The video's provocative imagery drew mixed reactions, but it didn't dampen the song's commercial impact.

"You Are Not Alone" made history as the first song ever to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat that earned a Guinness World Record. It became Jackson's thirteenth and final number-one single in the US, also topping charts across Europe and the UK. The single went platinum, selling over a million copies domestically. After Jackson's death in 2009, R. Kelly included a version of the song as a hidden track on his album Love Letter.
