Yorgen Fenech

Yorgen Fenech, born in Pietà, Malta, on November 23, 1981, rose from local business circles to become one of the country's most powerful corporate figures before his life unraveled under criminal investigation. As head of the Tumas Group and director of ElectroGas Malta, he controlled significant assets including the Hilton Hotel in Malta through a golden share that gave him decisive influence. His business empire expanded into offshore ventures, notably owning the company known as 17 Black, which became central to investigations into financial irregularities. The trajectory of his career shifted dramatically in late 2019 when investigators linked him to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. At the time of her death, Galizia was probing the connection between 17 Black and the Electrogas project, a massive energy deal involving multiple governments. Prosecutors allege that Fenech used this offshore structure to funnel payments to government officials, a scheme detailed in the Panama Papers. He faced charges of complicity in murder, criminal association, bribery, money laundering, and the illicit purchase of grenades, pistols, and poison via the dark web. By mid-2026, Fenech stood trial facing two counts related to the murder, with prosecutors requesting a life sentence if found guilty. During proceedings, he admitted ownership of 17 Black while maintaining his innocence regarding the specific charges. The case exposed encrypted messages between Fenech and Ray Aquilina, the former head of the anti-money laundering unit, suggesting collusion during an active investigation.
