About
Founded in 1972 as the corporate soccer team for Nissan Motor, this club has stood at the summit of Japanese football for decades. They entered the J.League in 1993 under their current name and have never been relegated from the top flight since 1982. The team plays its home matches at the International Stadium Yokohama, a venue famous for hosting the 2002 World Cup Final.
The squad blends experienced Japanese internationals with high-profile foreign signings to maintain a competitive edge. Their history includes five league titles and three Emperor's Cups, establishing them as one of the most decorated sides in the region. Fans fill the stands with passionate support, creating an atmosphere often described as the "Red Wave" due to the team's traditional red and white colors.
Rivalry matches define the club's calendar, particularly the intense local clashes against Kawasaki Frontale known as the Yokohama Derby. These games draw massive crowds and generate significant passion among supporters who follow the team across Japan and internationally. Recent seasons have seen leadership changes, with Steve Corica taking charge as manager for the 2026 campaign alongside Head Coach Danny Hay.
History
The organization began in 1972 as the Nissan Motors Soccer Club, serving as the company's internal sports division. When the professional J.League launched in 1993, the team rebranded to Yokohama F. Marinos and immediately joined the new top tier. They secured their first major trophy by winning the Emperor's Cup in 1992 before the league even started, followed by a historic league title in 1995 led by Brazilian striker Juninho Paulista.
Success continued into the 2000s with back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004, cementing the club's status as a dominant force. The team added another Emperor's Cup in 2004 and claimed the J.League Cup twice in 2001 and 2022. A fifth league title arrived in 2019, and they won the Emperor's Cup again in 2023 to complete a domestic double.
Management has shifted frequently over the years, featuring prominent figures like Ange Postecoglou, who guided the team from 2018 to 2021 before moving to Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur. More recent eras saw Kevin Muscat and Harry Kewell take the helm. As of the 2026 season, Steve Corica leads the squad while Danny Hay serves as Head Coach, reflecting the dynamic nature of the club's management structure.
