Magokichi Yamaoka opened a small foundry in Osaka on March 1, 1912, marking the start of what would become Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd. The company produced Japan's first diesel engine in 1933 and earned the title "Father of Diesel Engines" for its role in domestic industrialization. Its name combines the founder's surname with the word "power," reflecting a focus on energy solutions that now span marine propulsion, agriculture, and construction.

Yanmar operates globally with manufacturing sites in Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Africa. In July 2026, the brand launched three new compact track loaders featuring ASV Posi-Track technology after rebranding ASV Loaders to Yanmar in North America. This move followed a strategic push to integrate proprietary track systems into its own product lines while phasing out the ASV nameplate in the U.S. market.

The company continues to expand capacity through significant investments. A $56 million facility under construction in Brazil aims to support agricultural equipment supply chains in South America as of August 2026. Meanwhile, the Grand Rapids, Michigan plant reached a production milestone of 50,000 units in June 2026.
