China"Innovation for everyone"
About
Xiaomi was born in a small Beijing office on April 6, 2010, when Lei Jun and six co-founders set out to build a company that would shake up the mobile industry. The name itself, meaning little rice in Chinese, came from Lei Jun himself. The founding team brought together deep expertise: Wanqiang Li had a background in human-computer interface design and would shape the MIUI operating system, while De Liu was a product design professor. Within a year, Xiaomi launched its first smartphone, a device that packed high-end specs into a chassis priced far below rivals. The formula worked. By 2014, Xiaomi had become the top smartphone seller in China and the third largest globally, moving over 61 million phones that year.
The company built its early momentum through online flash sales and a fiercely loyal community it called Mi Fans. These fans didn't just buy products; they tested beta software, suggested features, and spread the word. Xiaomi programmers communicated directly with users on forums, turning customer feedback into rapid MIUI updates. This community-driven model let Xiaomi keep marketing costs low while generating enormous buzz. The approach worked especially well in India, where Xiaomi entered aggressively and quickly became a dominant player. But rapid growth brought growing pains. After peaking in 2014, Xiaomi stumbled as customers began to associate the brand with quality issues. The company spent years rebuilding its reputation and refining its product lineup before regaining its footing.
Today Xiaomi is far more than a phone maker. Its product ecosystem spans tablets, laptops, smart TVs, wearables, air purifiers, robot vacuums, and hundreds of other connected devices, all tied together through the MIUI platform. The company also operates Youpin Mall, an e-commerce site that curates third-party products meeting Xiaomi's standards. In 2021, Xiaomi announced its boldest move yet: entry into the electric vehicle market. The Xiaomi SU7 sedan launched in 2024, signaling the company's ambition to become a major player in automotive. With annual revenue reaching $365.91 billion in FY2024 and a market cap around $74.55 billion, Xiaomi ranks among the world's largest technology companies by revenue, even as it continues to face stiff competition from Apple, Samsung, and Huawei in its core smartphone business.
