He is widely viewed as the heir to Puerto Rico's rich boxing legacy. Zayas is known for his composure, work ethic, and ring IQ, making him a fan favorite and a symbol of national pride. As of 2026, he is preparing for his first title defense, with expectations high for a long championship reign.[edit]

Xander Yarob Zayas Castro was born on September 5, 2002, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he spent his early childhood years. Growing up in the bustling Cantera neighborhood, he began to hone a distinctive technical boxing style that would define his approach to the sport from a young age. At just five years old, his mother enrolled him in a local boxing gym, primarily as a means for him to learn self-defense against bullies. This initial step quickly revealed a natural talent, as he secured a victory in his very first amateur fight at the age of six. This early success propelled him forward, leading him to win an impressive 20 consecutive bouts. By the time he was ten, having already captured his third Puerto Rican national title, Zayas confidently declared to his family his unwavering ambition to become a professional boxer.

The trajectory of Zayas's burgeoning career shifted when, at the age of 11, his family relocated to Sunrise, Florida, a move that would establish his base of operations. In Florida, he continued his intensive training, primarily at Sweatbox Boxing & Fitness in Davie. A significant turning point in his development occurred after the passing of his first trainer, which led him to begin working with Javiel Centeno. Under Centeno's guidance, Zayas underwent a comprehensive rebuilding of his technique, refining his skills from the ground up. Balancing his athletic pursuits with academics, he attended Plantation High School for his freshman and sophomore years. However, to accommodate the increasingly demanding schedule required by his boxing training, he transitioned to homeschooling. Despite his clear dedication to boxing, Zayas harbored alternative aspirations, having considered studying criminal law and pursuing a career as a police officer if his boxing ambitions did not come to fruition .

His relentless dedication and exceptional talent culminated in a pivotal moment for the young athlete: at just 16 years old, Xander Zayas signed with Top Rank, making him the youngest prospect ever to join the renowned boxing promotion company . This milestone marked his official entry into the professional ranks, setting the stage for his remarkable ascent in the sport.[edit]

In 2019, at 16, Zayas became the youngest boxer ever to sign with Top Rank. He made his professional debut in November 2019, two months after turning 17. Over the next three years, he built an undefeated record and won his first regional title in August 2022.

His breakout came in December 2023, when he knocked out Jorge Fortea in five rounds to win the NABF and WBO NABO super welterweight titles. In June 2024, he headlined his first main event, outpointing former world champion Patrick Teixeira over ten rounds. He followed with a unanimous decision over Damian Sosa in September 2024 and a ninth-round TKO of previously unbeaten Slawa Spomer at Madison Square Garden in February 2025.

On July 26, 2025, Zayas defeated Jorge Garcia by unanimous decision to win the WBO super welterweight world title. Six months later, on January 31, 2026, he unified the division by defeating Abass Baraou via split decision, claiming the WBA belt and becoming boxing's youngest unified champion at 23. [edit]

Zayas is promoted as the new face of Puerto Rican boxing, a role Top Rank envisioned when signing him at 16. Media describe him as mature, disciplined, and technically advanced for his age. His fighting style is composed and methodical, with trainer Javiel Centeno credited for perfecting his fundamentals. Fans connect with his underdog story and his pride in representing Puerto Rico. He has a strong social media following, particularly on Instagram, where he shares training updates and personal moments. [edit]

The narrative surrounding Xander Zayas is less about a singular, organized legion and more about the organic swell of Puerto Rican pride intersecting with global pop culture. His supporters, often referred to as "Team Xander" on his social channels, rallied behind his rise from a homeschooled teenager to the youngest unified world champion in boxing history. This connection deepened significantly when reggaeton icon Bad Bunny publicly identified Zayas as his favorite boxer, bridging the gap between combat sports and Latin music audiences. Fans celebrated his unification victory over Abass Baraou as a triumph for the island, yet the story took a sharp turn during his knockout loss to Jaron "Boots" Ennis at Barclays Center. Instead of fracturing, the fanbase absorbed the defeat with surprising grace, echoing Zayas's own post-fight humility where he admitted he lost fair and square. Despite this high-profile setback, the community remains tight-knit, viewing his career as an ongoing saga rather than a concluded chapter. While his digital footprint reaches over 432,000 followers on Instagram, iFANN's Global Fame Engine has evaluated this person, but they do not currently hold a placement in the published rankings (Global Top 1,000 or a Top-100 scope list). The absence of a formal numeric ranking reflects a specific phase in his trajectory: a star whose fame is deeply regional and sport-specific rather than globally ubiquitous across all demographics. There is no documented fandom name beyond the informal "Team Xander" handle used by his support network. The legend of Zayas now balances the glory of his rapid ascent with the harsh reality of his fall, creating a complex cultural figure who commands respect even in defeat.[edit]

Before stepping into the professional ring, Zayas secured five Puerto Rican national amateur titles, laying the groundwork for a record-breaking career. As a child, he immersed himself in the legacies of Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, Hector Camacho, and Wilfredo Benitez, watching their fights with family and studying footage to refine his own style. He once considered a path outside the ring, exploring a future as a police officer and studying criminal law before committing fully to boxing. During his junior year, he was homeschooled but remained dedicated to returning for prom and graduation, balancing education with his training. A pivotal moment in his personal mythology occurred when he promised his trainer, Javiel Centeno, that he would become Centeno's first world champion, a vow he fulfilled by becoming boxing's youngest unified world champion. The narrative of his career shifted dramatically in June 2026 when he suffered a seventh-round knockout loss to Jaron Ennis after predicting he would be bigger and stronger on fight night. Following this defeat, he declined a contractual rematch, choosing instead to regroup and face the psychological toll of the loss head-on. This decision marked a turning point, transforming his story from one of an undefeated prodigy to a fallen champion navigating the complexities of elite competition.[edit]

Zayas was raised by his mother, Yaitza, along with his sister and stepfather. His mother made the decision for him to turn professional and emphasized the importance of education. The family moved from San Juan to Sunrise, Florida when Zayas was 11. He has not publicly shared the names of his sister or stepfather. As of 2026, he lives in Sunrise and has no reported children or pets. [edit]

Zayas is trained by Javiel Centeno at Sweatbox Boxing & Fitness in Davie, Florida. He is promoted by Top Rank, who signed him at 16 as their youngest prospect. He grew up admiring Miguel Cotto and also studied Felix Trinidad, Hector Camacho, and Wilfredo Benitez. [edit]

Per iFANN's editorial analysis, Xander Zayas's estimated net worth stands at $2 Million as of 2026. This valuation reflects his status as a rising star in the junior middleweight division, though his primary earnings stem from professional fight purses that have surged since he captured the WBA and WBO light middleweight titles. Reports indicate his purse for the unification bout against Abass Baraou landed in the mid-six figures, with expectations set for higher payouts in upcoming title defenses. Beyond the ring, Zayas generates income through sponsorship deals tied to Top Rank and various Puerto Rican brand endorsements. He resides in Sunrise, Florida, and has not publicly disclosed major investments or real estate holdings, keeping his financial portfolio relatively private despite his growing fame.[edit]

Zayas has won Prospect of the Year honors from multiple boxing organizations in 2023. He has held the NABF and WBO NABO super welterweight titles, and became WBO champion in 2025 before unifying with the WBA belt in 2026. [edit]
