About
Founded on May 8, 1937 by seven patriots in Casablanca, Wydad Athletic Club emerged as a direct challenge to French colonial rule. The club's creation was driven by a desire to foster national identity rather than simple athletic competition. Ihab Hajnaoui formally organized the football section two years after the initial founding, establishing red as the primary color to symbolize passion and resistance.
The team plays its home matches at the Mohammed V Stadium, a venue with a capacity of roughly 67,000 spectators that serves as a central hub for the city. This ground hosts the intense Casablanca Derby against Raja Casablanca, widely considered one of the fiercest rivalries in African football. Supporters known as the Red Army maintain a culture deeply rooted in patriotism, often displaying elaborate tifos and maintaining unwavering loyalty through decades of political and social change.
History
Wydad has secured the title of the most successful club in Moroccan history with multiple domestic league championships and Throne Cup victories. On the continental stage, the team won the CAF Champions League three times, cementing its status as an elite force within the Confederation of African Football. The squad currently maintains an average age of approximately 25.7 years across a roster of about 34 players.
Recent seasons have seen significant administrative and personnel shifts. In July 2026, members rejected the financial report during the general assembly, highlighting ongoing governance challenges. The summer of 2026 concluded with the termination of Hakim Ziyech's contract by mutual consent on September 6, ending a contentious chapter. Following this split, the club signed Jordanian international Nizar Al-Rashdan on a one-year deal in August 2026 to bolster the roster for the 2026-2027 campaign.
