About
As of 2026 Wunderhorse remain an active touring and recording band, with Jacob Slater fronting a four-piece of Harry Fowler, Seb Byford and Jamie Staples. Their two albums, Cub and Midas, have made them a fixture of British guitar music coverage, and the Best Group prize at the November 2025 Rolling Stone UK Awards placed them among the year's most discussed rock acts. The band's draw is less a matter of sales figures than of a live show that reviewers consistently describe in physical terms, and of Slater's writing, which treats self-doubt and relationship strain without decoration.
Their 2026 calendar illustrates the scale they now operate at: Lollapalooza in Chicago in early August, Outside Lands in San Francisco on 8 August, Electric Picnic in Ireland later that month, and a headline slot at Rock and Roll Circus in Sheffield alongside Richard Ashcroft on 29 and 30 August. Sam Fender's announcement in October 2026 of a UK and Ireland stadium tour for summer 2027, with Wunderhorse in support, extends that reach further. The band are London-based and currently active, with a lineup of Slater on vocals and guitar, Fowler on guitar, Byford on bass and Staples on drums. In March 2026 they confirmed new North American summer headline shows, and they have been playing US dates including the Bluebird Theater in Denver. They also have upcoming Wembley Stadium appearances listed for June, and headline shows in Belfast, Cork and Sheffield announced for August. Because Wunderhorse is a rock band rather than a K-pop-style idol group, there are no assigned positions such as leader, main vocalist, visual, center or maknae, and no sub-units. Their official channels include the website and store at wunderhorseband.com, Instagram at @wunderhorse_, X/Twitter at @wunderhorse, a YouTube channel, Spotify and Apple Music.
Formation Story
Wunderhorse began in 2020 as a solo recording project for Jacob Slater, who had previously fronted the London punk group Dead Pretties. Slater issued early material under the Wunderhorse name himself, without a band behind him, treating it as an outlet for songs that did not fit the punk format. The name, the circumstances of its choosing and Slater's own biographical details are things fans frequently ask about; the available record does not settle them.
The project became a band in 2021. Slater was joined by guitarist Harry Fowler, bassist Pete Woodin and drummer Jamie Staples, and the shift from solo outlet to working group changed the material's character. Songs that had been built around a single voice and guitar were reworked for four players, with the rhythm section giving the arrangements a weight the early recordings lacked. Woodin later left and Seb Byford took over on bass, completing the lineup that has played the band's largest shows.
There was no audition process and no label trainee system behind any of this. Wunderhorse assembled organically around Slater's writing, which is unusual in a British guitar-band landscape where development deals and management-built lineups are common. The debut album, Cub, arrived in 2022, carrying early singles including "Teal," "Purple" and "Atlantis." Lyric videos accompanied "Purple" and "Atlantis," and the "Teal" video has drawn roughly 672,000 views on YouTube. The second album, Midas, followed in 2024 and also produced official videos for "Silver" and the title track "Midas."
Midas raised the band's profile considerably, though not without friction: the record drew frequent comparisons to Radiohead and Nirvana, which Slater addressed directly in interviews rather than letting the framing stand. By the time the Rolling Stone UK Awards named them Best Group in November 2025, the group had moved from Slater's solitary project to a fixture of British festival bills in five years.

Musical Style
Wunderhorse work in the space between 1990s alternative rock and contemporary indie, with fuzzy, distorted guitars carrying most of the melodic weight and a rhythm section that pushes rather than decorates. The production is unglamorous by design; the records sound like a band in a room, and the live shows extend that approach rather than correcting it. Slater's lyrics are first-person and unguarded, addressing anxiety, relationship breakdown and self-doubt in plain language. He has cited a favourite 1960s album as a formative influence and has discussed Elliott Smith in interviews, which points to the songwriting lineage he draws on: melodic, melancholy, structurally modest.

Cultural Impact
The band's influence is easiest to see in the live circuit. Wunderhorse have become a reliable draw at festivals on both sides of the Atlantic, appearing at Lollapalooza in August 2026 on a bill with Turnstile and YOASOBI, at Outside Lands on 8 August 2026, and at Electric Picnic later that month. Their booking as support on Sam Fender's 2027 stadium tour places them in front of audiences far larger than their own headline shows reach. Within British guitar music, the band's willingness to be compared to Radiohead and Nirvana and to keep playing anyway has made them a reference point in conversations about what a modern rock band is supposed to sound like. Their reputation rests heavily on intense live shows, and they have toured extensively across the UK, Europe and North America.
Fandom Culture
Wunderhorse have no official fandom name, no lightstick and no colour, which suits a rock band that came up through clubs rather than a trainee system. Their fan community gathers on Reddit at r/wunderhorse and follows the band's Instagram and X accounts for tour announcements. The questions that recur among fans are the ones the band has not answered: where the name comes from, how old Slater is, and what connects the group to Ireland. Live crowds are the main expression of the fandom, with the band's festival sets drawing reviews that focus on volume and intensity rather than spectacle.

Trivia
Wunderhorse are a British alternative rock band formed in 2020 by frontman and songwriter Jacob Slater, and they have since become one of the most talked-about acts in British guitar music. The band are still referred to as Rolling Stone UK's Group of the Year heading into 2026. Beyond the two studio albums, discography details, exact chart peak positions, tour grosses, complete award-win lists, magazine covers, rankings, streaming and sales records, government honours and social-media follower counts are not documented in the available sources; the Best Group win at the Rolling Stone UK Awards in November 2025 is the only confirmed major award.
