About
WrestleMania is WWE's flagship annual event, a two-night spectacle that blends athletic competition with theatrical storytelling. First held on March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden, it was the brainchild of Vince McMahon, who saw an opportunity to transform regional wrestling into national entertainment. The name came from ring announcer Howard Finkel, and the first event featured Hulk Hogan teaming with Mr. T against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff, with Muhammad Ali as guest referee. That night drew 19,121 fans and launched a franchise that would grow into a global phenomenon.
Each year between mid-March and mid-April, WrestleMania takes over a major stadium, packing in tens of thousands of fans for a weekend of events including the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, NXT TakeOver, and fan conventions. The show itself runs two nights since 2020, with multiple championship matches, celebrity appearances, and elaborate entrances. It is WWE's most-watched event of the year, streamed live on Peacock in the U.S. and available via pay-per-view worldwide. The 2026 edition, WrestleMania 42, took place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
WrestleMania has hosted some of the most famous matches in wrestling history: Hulk Hogan slamming Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III in front of 93,173 fans, The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker's undefeated streak, and the first women's main event at WrestleMania 35. It is the longest-running professional wrestling event ever and has been called the Super Bowl of sports entertainment. The event generates hundreds of millions in economic impact for host cities and draws viewers from over 180 countries.
History
Vince McMahon bought his father's Capitol Wrestling Corporation in 1982 and rebranded it as the World Wrestling Federation. He envisioned a national expansion, and WrestleMania was the vehicle. The first event in 1985 relied on cross-promotion with MTV, featuring Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T to draw mainstream eyes. It worked: the show sold out Madison Square Garden and did strong pay-per-view numbers, proving wrestling could be a mass-market product.
WrestleMania III in 1987 at the Pontiac Silverdome set a North American indoor attendance record of 93,173, with the iconic moment of Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant. Through the 1990s, the event evolved with the rise of stars like The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, and Bret Hart. The Attitude Era peaked with WrestleMania X-Seven in 2001, where Stone Cold Steve Austin turned heel by aligning with Vince McMahon. The event moved to larger stadiums exclusively after 2000, and in 2014, WrestleMania XXX introduced the WWE Network livestream. WrestleMania 32 in 2016 set the all-time WWE attendance record of 101,763 at AT&T Stadium.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced WrestleMania 36 to be held at the WWE Performance Center with no fans, split into two nights for the first time. That format stuck. WrestleMania 37 in 2021 was the first major sports event to welcome a full-capacity crowd post-lockdown. Since then, the event has continued to grow, with WrestleMania 42 in 2026 headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes and a sold-out crowd at Allegiant Stadium.

Cultural Impact
WrestleMania transformed professional wrestling from a regional sideshow into a global entertainment juggernaut. The event's early crossovers with MTV and celebrities like Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper helped break wrestling into mainstream pop culture in the 1980s. WrestleMania III's attendance record proved that wrestling could fill stadiums on par with major sports. The event has hosted presidents (Donald Trump appeared at WrestleMania IV and V), musicians (Alicia Keys, Machine Gun Kelly, Bad Bunny have performed), and athletes (Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, Lawrence Taylor have participated). WrestleMania 35's women's main event marked a milestone for gender equality in sports entertainment. The event also drives significant tourism revenue for host cities, with WrestleMania 28 in Miami generating an estimated $102.5 million in economic impact. Forbes has repeatedly named WrestleMania one of the world's most valuable sports event brands.
Controversies
WrestleMania has not been without controversy. WrestleMania IX in 1993, held outdoors at Caesars Palace, was widely criticized for its chaotic booking, including Yokozuna winning the WWF Championship and then immediately losing it to Hulk Hogan in an impromptu match. The decision to end The Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania XXX in 2014 sparked intense debate among fans, with many feeling it should have remained intact. WrestleMania 32 drew criticism for its overlong runtime and the decision to have Roman Reigns win the championship in a match that many felt was predictable. The COVID-era WrestleMania 36 lacked live fans, leading to a muted atmosphere, though the company had no alternative. More recently, some fans have complained about the two-night format diluting the event's impact.
