About
The World Series is the annual championship of Major League Baseball, the premier professional baseball league in North America. Contested since 1903, it pits the champion of the American League against the champion of the National League in a best-of-seven series. The event has earned the nickname "the Fall Classic" and sits at the heart of American sports culture. Each October, two teams battle for the Commissioner's Trophy, a prize first introduced in 1967. The series has produced legendary moments: Babe Ruth's called shot in 1932, Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956, and the Chicago Cubs breaking a 108-year drought in 2016. It draws massive television audiences and generates fierce excitement in the winning city. Steeped in tradition, from ceremonial first pitches to the postgame champagne showers, the World Series remains the pinnacle of achievement in baseball.
History
The World Series was born out of a peace agreement between the National League and the upstart American League, which had been raiding NL rosters since 1901. In 1903, the two leagues signed a pact recognizing each other's legitimacy, and the first World's Championship Series was arranged between the Boston Americans (AL) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (NL). Boston won that best-of-nine affair five games to three. The event was not held in 1904 because the NL champion New York Giants refused to play the AL champion Boston Americans, but it returned in 1905 under a set of rules established by Giants owner John Brush. These "Brush Rules" formalized the best-of-seven format and a 2-3-2 home-game schedule, a structure that held for decades. The series was canceled again in 1994 due to a players' strike, the first mid-season work stoppage to wipe out the postseason. Since then, the World Series has run uninterrupted, with the 2020 edition played entirely at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cultural Impact
The World Series is woven into the fabric of American life. Its nickname "the Fall Classic" captures its place alongside Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July as an annual ritual. The series has produced folklore passed down through generations: Ruth's called shot, Larsen's perfect game, Fisk's home run. It has inspired films like The Natural and Field of Dreams, and its imagery appears in countless advertisements. The event also reflects broader social changes: Jackie Robinson played in the 1955 series, and the 2020 series was played under pandemic protocols. For cities, winning the World Series means a parade, a civic celebration, and sometimes a permanent place in baseball lore. The phrase "World Series" itself, despite the event featuring only U.S. and Canadian teams, has become synonymous with the highest level of competition.
Controversies
The 1919 Black Sox Scandal remains the darkest chapter in World Series history. Eight Chicago White Sox players, including star Shoeless Joe Jackson, conspired with gamblers to intentionally lose to the Cincinnati Reds. All eight were banned from baseball for life by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. In 1904, the New York Giants refused to face the AL champion, causing the only cancellation of the series until the 1994 players' strike wiped out the entire postseason. The 1994 strike, which began in August, led to the first year without a World Series since 1904, deeply disappointing fans and damaging the sport's reputation. More recently, the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal during their 2017 championship run sparked debate about the legitimacy of their title, though the team was not stripped of the trophy.
