    About This Album

Oasis released "Wonderwall" as the fourth single from their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, on 30 October 1995 through Creation Records. The track, written by Noel Gallagher and co-produced with Owen Morris, is a Britpop staple built around a chiming acoustic guitar riff and Liam Gallagher's nasal, yearning vocal delivery. Noel described the song as being about "an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself." The title was lifted from George Harrison's 1968 solo album Wonderwall Music, and the band initially planned to record the song on a wall outside Rockfield Studios before opting for a studio take. The album itself, a defining record of the Britpop era, features 12 tracks that blend Beatlesque melodies with working-class swagger.

"Wonderwall" became a global hit, reaching the top 10 in 15 countries. It topped charts in Australia and New Zealand and peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and the Irish Singles Chart. In the United States, it climbed to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Oasis their only top-40 entry there. The single earned octuple platinum certification from the BPI and 12-times platinum in Australia. Its music video, directed by Nigel Dick, won British Video of the Year at the 1996 Brit Awards. Over time, "Wonderwall" has been covered by artists ranging from Ryan Adams to Cat Power, and in October 2020, it became the first song from the 1990s to reach one billion streams on Spotify.
