Eric Clapton composed Wonderful Tonight in late 1976 while waiting for Pattie Boyd to finish getting ready for Paul McCartney's annual Buddy Holly party. The guitarist used his 1974 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar to write the melody and lyrics as he watched her apply makeup and choose an outfit. This quiet observation transformed into a soft rock ballad that appeared on his eighth studio album, Slowhand, released in October 1977.

Glyn Johns produced the track to capture a warm, intimate sound that contrasted with Clapton's usual blues-rock intensity. The recording includes subtle vocal harmonies by Marcella Detroit and Yvonne Elliman, which add depth without overpowering Clapton's gentle delivery. Although the song never reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number two in the United States and entered the top ten of the UK Singles Chart.
