Wolverhampton Wanderers, better known simply as Wolves, are a professional football club rooted in the West Midlands. They play their home matches at Molineux Stadium, a ground they have called home since 1889. The team wears old gold shirts and black shorts, and their wolf's head crest has been a fixture since 1979. Wolves have intense local rivalries, most notably with West Bromwich Albion in the Black Country derby, as well as with Aston Villa, Stoke City, and Birmingham City. Since 2016, the club has been owned by Chinese conglomerate Fosun International.

Founded in 1877 as St. Luke's F.C., the club renamed itself Wolverhampton Wanderers two years later and became a founding member of the Football League in 1888. Their first FA Cup win came in 1893, and they repeated the feat in 1908 while playing in the Second Division. Under manager Stan Cullis, Wolves won three English league titles in the 1950s (1953–54, 1957–58, 1958–59) and added FA Cup victories in 1949 and 1960. The club also claimed the League Cup in 1974 and 1980.

Financial troubles hit hard in the early 1980s, pushing Wolves close to liquidation. A steep decline saw them drop to the Fourth Division by 1986, but they bounced back quickly, winning the Fourth Division and Football League Trophy in 1988, followed by the Third Division title in 1989. After years in the second tier, Wolves reached the Premier League for the first time in 2003, though they were relegated after one season. They returned to the top flight by winning the Championship in 2009, but suffered relegation again in 2012 and then dropped to League One in 2013. A swift recovery saw them win League One in 2014 and the Championship in 2018, re-establishing themselves in the Premier League. Wolves also have a European pedigree, having reached the UEFA Cup final in 1972 and the Europa League quarter-finals in 2020, and their floodlit friendlies in the 1950s helped inspire the creation of the European Cup. Wolverhampton Wanderers were founded on 13 January 1877 as St. Luke's F.C., named after a local church school. Two years later, the club merged with The Blakenhall Wanderers and adopted the name Wolverhampton Wanderers. They became a founding member of the Football League on 17 April 1888, the world's first domestic football league. The club moved to Molineux Stadium in 1889, playing its first official match there on 7 September before a crowd of 4,000.

The club enjoyed early success, winning the FA Cup in 1893 and 1908. The latter victory was notable because Wolves were a Second Division side at the time. The golden era came under manager Stan Cullis in the 1950s, when Wolves won three league titles (1953–54, 1957–58, 1958–59) and two FA Cups (1949, 1960). Cullis also oversaw a series of floodlit friendlies against top European sides, which helped inspire the creation of the European Cup. Wolves reached the UEFA Cup final in 1972, losing to Tottenham Hotspur, and won the League Cup in 1974 and 1980.

The 1980s brought severe financial difficulties. The club nearly went out of business and fell to the Fourth Division by 1986. But a revival under manager Graham Turner saw them win the Fourth Division and Football League Trophy in 1988, followed by the Third Division title in 1989. Wolves spent much of the next two decades in the second tier, with brief Premier League stints in 2003–04 and 2009–12. After relegation to League One in 2013, they bounced back immediately, winning League One in 2014 and the Championship in 2018 under Nuno Espírito Santo. The club then enjoyed three consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League, qualified for the Europa League, and reached the quarter-finals in 2020. However, results declined thereafter, and Wolves finished 20th in the 2024–25 Premier League, resulting in relegation to the EFL Championship for the 2025–26 season. [edit]
