About This Album
Pink Floyd returned in September 1975 with Wish You Were Here, their ninth studio effort recorded at London's EMI Studios. Released by Harvest Records in the UK and Columbia in the US, this nine-track journey blends progressive rock, art rock, and experimental textures to explore deep themes of alienation and corporate greed. The record centers on a nine-part suite titled Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a poignant tribute to founding member Syd Barrett who happened to wander into the studio while the band was tracking. Guest vocalist Roy Harper delivers scathing lines on Have a Cigar, while synthesizers and heavy studio effects underscore the group's signature sound alongside contributions from backing singers Venetta Fields and Carlena Williams.
Critics initially reacted with confusion, finding the work less inspired than their previous hit, but the album quickly climbed charts in the UK and US. It eventually sold an estimated 13 million copies worldwide and earned gold certifications in both nations. Today, members Richard Wright, Nick Mason, and David Gilmour consider it their favorite, while Roger Waters calls it their most complete work.
