Wigan Athletic F.C. traces its roots to 1932, when three local clubs, Wigan Borough, Wigan Central, and Atherton Laburnum Rovers, merged to form a new professional entity in Greater Manchester. The team plays at the Brick Community Stadium, a venue with a capacity of 25,138 that has hosted them since 1999 after they left Springfield Park. Their identity is traditionally marked by blue and white stripes, though solid blue kits have appeared frequently throughout their history.

The club achieved its greatest glory on May 14, 2013, when they defeated Premier League giants Manchester City 1–0 in extra time to win the FA Cup. This victory made them the first non-Premier League side to lift the trophy since 1976. Following this triumph, they secured promotion to the top flight in 2005 via the Championship play-offs and finished sixth in their debut season before relegation. They also claimed the EFL League One title in the 2020–21 campaign.

Current manager Gary Caldwell led the squad during the 2026/27 season as they competed in EFL League One. Recent roster moves included the permanent signing of Finley Burns from Manchester City's Elite Development Squad in July 2026. Despite this success, financial pressures and league performance led to their relegation back to the Championship later that year.

In recent years, ownership under Mike Danson has sparked debate regarding the club's future direction. The team returned to the Championship but faced relegation again, finding themselves in EFL League One by the 2026/27 season.
