Widow's Bay

Widow's Bay is a horror-comedy mystery series created by Katie Dippold that premiered on Apple TV+ in April 2026. The show is set on a quaint, insular island 40 miles off the coast of New England, accessible only by an unreliable ferry, with no Wi-Fi and spotty cellular reception. The island has been economically sustained for generations by fishing and whaling, but its glory days are long past.

The central protagonist is Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), a widower raising his teenage son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick) alone. Tom was born off-island and became mayor by default after running uncontested. He is desperate to revitalize the struggling community and transform Widow's Bay into the next Martha's Vineyard, a tourist destination that will bring prosperity and save the island from economic collapse. However, Tom is widely disliked by the superstitious locals who believe he is soft, cowardly, and dangerously wrong about the island's nature.

The townsfolk, led by local eccentric Wyck Crawford (Stephen Root), insist that Widow's Bay is cursed, a belief rooted in centuries of plagues, ruinous typhoons, and supernatural visitations. They claim the island awakens periodically and goes violently crazy. Tom initially dismisses these warnings as lunatic whispers, but his skepticism begins to crumble in Episode 2 after a disturbing night at the Breakwater Inn. Mayor Tom Loftis has a plan: turn the dying island of Widow's Bay into a tourist hotspot. The locals have a different plan: warn him that the island is cursed and that tourists will awaken something terrible. Tom, a widower raising his teenage son Evan, is desperate for economic revival and dismisses the superstitions as backward thinking. He pushes ahead with marketing campaigns, renovations, and ferry schedules, all while battling the island's eccentric residents who think he's a fool.

The supporting cast includes Patricia (Kate O'Flynn), Tom's lonely, awkward second-in-command who delivers aggrieved zingers; Sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll), the local law enforcement; Rosemary (Dale Dickey), a town elder; and Wyck Crawford (Stephen Root), the primary opposition to Tom's tourist plans. Tom's son Evan, a teenager who smokes weed and gets into trouble, becomes increasingly entangled in the island's dark secrets.

The central conflict revolves around Tom's determination to build a better future for his son and the island versus the ancient, blood-thirsty entity that has governed Widow's Bay since its founding. A centuries-old bargain made by the island's founder, Richard Warren, binds all residents to the land, making escape nearly impossible. As tourists begin arriving, just as Tom hoped, the old stories start becoming terrifyingly real.

Season 1 (10 episodes) follows Tom's journey from skeptical mayor to reluctant believer as he attempts to understand and potentially bargain with the supernatural force. The season builds toward a climactic storm that traps the islanders in an emergency shelter, where the entity's demands for sacrifice become impossible to ignore.
