Wide Awake

Released on May 22, 2012, "Wide Awake" arrived as the second single from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, the expanded reissue of Perry's third studio album. The track functions as a thematic anchor for her autobiographical documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me, marking a shift from the celebratory pop of earlier singles to a more introspective exploration of heartbreak and resilience. Recorded at NightBird Studios in West Hollywood, the song blends synth-driven production with piano-led verses, creating a dance-pop power ballad that balances emotional weight with a driving beat.

The narrative draws directly from Perry's real-life divorce from actor Russell Brand, revealing a moment of clarity where she realizes the end of a relationship after being "in the dark." Written by Katy Perry alongside producers Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Cirkut, and songwriter Bonnie McKee, the composition credits primarily attribute lyrics to Martin while sharing musical credit among all five writers. Critics praised the maturity of the track and Perry's vocal delivery, noting it added depth to the album's narrative arc during its re-release. [edit]
