About This Album
Madonna's first soundtrack album, Who's That Girl, arrived in July 1987 on Sire Records, serving as a companion to her film of the same name. The nine-track collection blends dance-pop and ballads, with Madonna contributing four songs alongside tracks from label mates Scritti Politti, Club Nouveau, and others. After the failure of Shanghai Surprise, Warner Bros. hesitated to greenlight another comedy starring Madonna, but she pushed forward, working with producers Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray. The title track, a buoyant dance number, convinced her to rename the film from Slammer. The album also includes the ballad "The Look of Love" and the Motown-inspired "Can't Stop."
Critics panned the soundtrack as uneven, though they singled out the title track and "The Look of Love" as highlights. Commercially, it topped charts in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, and sold six million copies worldwide. The title track became Madonna's sixth Billboard Hot 100 number one, making her the first solo female to achieve that in the 1980s. "Causing a Commotion" hit number two, while "The Look of Love" reached the top ten in the UK. The album's promotion included her successful Who's That Girl World Tour.
