What You Need

Tems released 'What You Need' on November 21, 2025, as a standalone single ahead of her upcoming EP Love Is a Kingdom. The track arrives through RCA Records and features production work by GuiltyBeatz, who co-wrote the song alongside Tems. This collaboration continues the Nigerian singer's exploration of atmospheric R&B textures while maintaining her distinct vocal style.

The lyrics address themes of emotional boundaries and self-preservation with a direct approach. Lines like 'I'm not what you need... Your love is not my' establish a firm stance on independence. The composition blends deep basslines with minimalist instrumentation to support the introspective mood set by the opening contemplation.

Upon release, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 and secured spots on the Billboard R&B/Soul Songs chart. Its immediate presence on these lists reflects strong streaming numbers and radio rotation in the United States shortly after launch. While certification details remain pending due to the recent release date, the track has generated significant discussion regarding its message on mental clarity within relationships. [edit]
