Western Michigan Broncos

The Western Michigan Broncos represent Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, competing as a Division I program within the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Their athletic department fields teams across a wide spectrum of sports including American football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, and volleyball. While most programs compete in the Mid-American Conference, distinct exceptions exist: the men's ice hockey team competes in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, and the men's soccer squad plays in the Missouri Valley Conference.

A unique component of the university's athletic identity is the SkyBroncos flight team, which has secured five National Intercollegiate Flying Association titles. The football program specifically began play in 1896, making it one of the older programs in the region. The football program traces its roots back to 1896, establishing itself as one of the region's oldest contests. Waldo Stadium opened on campus in 1937 and remains the central hub for game-day culture with a capacity of approximately 25,000 spectators.

On September 5, 2026, the season opener against the No. 16 ranked Michigan Wolverines became a flashpoint for officiating controversy. The Broncos held a 12-9 lead entering the final seconds before officials reset the clock to one second. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood threw a Hail Mary pass that resulted in a touchdown, securing a 13-12 victory. Head coach Lance Taylor stated the clock had already expired before the play occurred. The incident sparked global headlines and led the MAC to file an appeal with the NCAA and College Football Playoff committee to overturn the result.

Despite the appeals, the NCAA rejected the request, confirming the win remained with Michigan.
