Werewolves Within
"A social deduction game where the werewolf is among you."
Overview
Red Storm Entertainment built a digital campfire for eight players to gather around in the snowbound town of Beaver Creek. One person there has turned into a werewolf and kills a villager each night while the others try to figure out who it is before dawn breaks. The game launched on December 6, 2016, as an Oculus Rift exclusive before expanding to Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 systems. Players rely on voice chat and observation rather than reflexes or combat skills to survive the three nights of gameplay.
The title introduced unique character roles with hidden agendas beyond simple survival. Some villagers act as investigators who can uncover clues while others might secretly work against the group. Red Storm leveraged motion controllers in the VR version to let people physically point at suspects or check windows, creating a level of immersion that standard button presses could not match.
Gameplay
Players spend their time debating alibis and examining evidence during the day phase before voting someone out of the circle. The werewolf wins if they eliminate enough residents to outnumber the survivors by the final night. Townsfolk win only when they correctly identify and vote out the killer before the last dusk falls.
The original VR release used motion tracking to let users physically interact with the environment. People could pick up coffee mugs, look out windows, and gesture wildly while accusing their neighbors. Non-VR versions adapted these actions to mouse clicks and controller buttons without losing the core mechanic of real-time verbal persuasion.
Story
A stranger arrives in Beaver Creek just as a massive blizzard traps everyone inside the local inn. Residents quickly realize one of them has transformed into a werewolf and is hunting them down. The narrative unfolds through player interaction as accusations fly and alliances form during the chaotic night cycles.
The game features a roster of eccentric characters with specific abilities like gathering evidence or hiding secrets. These roles add layers of strategy since some villagers have goals unrelated to simply surviving the night.
